On Oct. 10th a large buyer emerged into the market and bought about $1 billion worth of S&P contracts in a timeframe of a few minutes forcing a huge rally in the entire market. Normally rallies are not the result of one giant buyer and if it is a big buyer they are discreet using different brokers and smaller bids. Traders all over are trying to figure out who it was, was it the US government's "plunge protection team"? Was it a large Middle Eastern or Asian sovereign wealth fund? Thats about the only two real possibilities that I've heard. Anyhow, see link below for the entertaining trading tape audio.
